Guwahati : Since joining South Point School, Guwahati, in 1984 as an English teacher, Sri Krishnanjan Chanda has witnessed—and shaped—the institution’s remarkable journey. Rising through the ranks to become Principal in 1996, he continues to lead with vision, passion, and unwavering commitment. An alumnus of the very school he now heads, Mr. Chanda holds a Master’s in English Literature and B.Ed. from Gauhati University, along with a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching English from CIEFL, Hyderabad.
In a freewheeling conversation with EduNe Bureau, he opens up about the ethos of South Point, its celebrated alumni like Indian cricketer Riyan Parag, and his vision for nurturing holistic excellence in a fast-changing world.

1. Could you describe your journey to becoming Principal of South Point School?
I started teaching at the school in 1984 and, after years of service and rising responsibilities, took on the role of principal in 1996. Since then, I am continuing in the position, guiding the school’s evolution over nearly four decades

2. How would you describe the ethos and vision of South Point School today?
The school is committed to providing 360-degree support for students—balancing academic rigor with extracurriculars and amenities. Its philosophy emphasizes holistic development: academics, sports, arts, and counselling work together to foster well rounded individuals. The school’s motto—“Pursuit in Excellence”—encapsulates this holistic ambition.

3. What unique programs or initiatives are you most proud of?
We have introduced a Mental Health Conditioning Programme and regular student counselling. In a time when education is highly competitive and stressful, these initiatives offer students emotional support and coping tools for their well-being.

4. South Point has produced several distinguished alumni. One notable alumnus is Riyan Parag, the Indian cricketer. How has the school supported his journey?


Riyan Parag studied till class 12 at South Point School, representing the school in cricket throughout those formative years. He brought multiple laurels to the institution and has since advanced to play for the national team. As an alumnus who rose to international cricket, he stands as a testament to the school’s support system and sporting culture . Other notable alumni include Hridoy Hazarika, a top-ranked air rifle shooter (currently ranked 6th in India), and Anyatam Rajkonwar, a champion swimmer in the special needs category.

5. What role do sports and extracurricular activities play in student development at South Point?
Such activities are seen as integral to student growth—sports, music, arts, and academics are given equal importance. While academics remains the core, the school ensures a thriving environment for holistic exploration.

6. What is your view on mobile phone use by students?
At South Point, mobile phones are not allowed. However, information technology is incorporated judiciously—between classes 3 and 12, students benefit from robust computer education. The goal is to use technology deliberately, without letting it replace natural learning and interpersonal experiences.7. Looking forward, what are your goals for the school in the coming years?
Key priorities include implementing the National Education Policy (NEP) by 2030 and introducing a range of new courses to better support student development. The school remains committed to its motto—Pursuit in Excellence—as it seeks to broaden and innovate its offerings.

7. What message would you like to share with parents and students considering South Point School?
I emphasize that South Point is a school dedicated to holistic development—committed to nurturing students to excel in all spheres of life. The institution promises to support every parent and child in their educational journey.
