New Delhi: In a first-of-its-kind rollout, OpenAI has announced that it will distribute over five lakh free ChatGPT licences to students and teachers across India under its new “OpenAI Learning Accelerator” program.
The initiative, described as one of the largest AI-focused education drives in the country, will focus on enhancing teaching methods and supporting students with personalized learning.
According to Leah Beklsky, VP & GM Education at OpenAI, Indian students already make up the largest student user base of ChatGPT globally. Many have been quick to adopt the recently launched Study Mode feature, which works as a personalized tutor for homework and exam preparation.
The free licences will be distributed through three key channels:
- Ministry of Education – to provide government school teachers access to ChatGPT for lesson planning and classroom support.
- All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) – to enable technical institutions across the country to integrate ChatGPT into learning environments.
- All Round Improvement in School Education (ARISE) – to empower educators in schools established for underprivileged children.
Along with access to ChatGPT, the program will also include training for teachers on how to leverage AI tools for lesson planning, assessments, and personalized student engagement.
OpenAI said the initiative marks an “India-first” commitment to bridging learning gaps with artificial intelligence. Education experts believe it could reshape digital learning in India by making advanced AI tools available to a wide network of educators and students.
