AICTE Partners with OpenAI to Provide 1.5 Lakh Free ChatGPT Licenses, Expanding AI Access in Indian Education

New Delhi: In a step towards integrating artificial intelligence into classrooms, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has partnered with OpenAI to distribute 1.5 lakh free ChatGPT Go licenses to students and faculty across AICTE-affiliated institutions.

Each license will be valid for six months, with the initiative aimed at boosting digital literacy, employability, and hands-on AI skills among India’s future workforce.

The partnership is part of OpenAI’s India-first Learning Accelerator, a large-scale initiative to make AI tools more accessible to educators and learners.

Beyond AICTE institutions, the scheme will also cover government school teachers from Classes 1 to 12, giving them access to ChatGPT for lesson planning, content creation, and personalized learning support. Educators from ARISE schools will also benefit from the rollout.

A key component of the initiative is a $500,000 (₹4.5 crore) research grant to IIT Madras, supporting long-term studies on how AI can transform education.

The collaboration will explore areas like curriculum design, personalized tutoring, and neuroscience-driven learning models. Findings will be shared publicly to guide AI adoption in classrooms worldwide.

Students will also get access to ChatGPT’s “Study Mode”, a tailored feature that breaks down complex concepts into step-by-step explanations. The tool is being optimized for Indic languages, ensuring accessibility for learners from diverse linguistic
