Guwahati: In a significant step towards bridging the gap between classroom learning and workplace demands, West Guwahati Commerce College (WGCC), in collaboration with Veecap Eduventures Private Limited, organised an Internship Certificate Distribution Ceremony for its 5th-semester students on Independence Day. The initiative, designed to sharpen professional skills and boost employability, reflects a growing emphasis on industry-academia partnerships in higher education.
The internship program, launched earlier this year, was structured into three intensive phases, each targeting a different dimension of career readiness:
- Phase 1 – ICT Skills Training: Students received hands-on training through IIT Bombay’s Spoken Tutorial Program, equipping them with essential digital skills to meet modern workplace standards.
- Phase 2 – Internship and Job Simulation: Participants engaged in virtual job simulations and received mentorship from four multinational companies, earning industry-recognised certificates in the process.
- Phase 3 – Physical Workshop: An in-person workshop focused on project writing, professional presentations, and the application of AI tools in workplace problem-solving.
The ceremony also marked the official launch of “Intern Lakshya”, a digital platform aimed at connecting students with potential employers, while enabling institutions to track and assess employability metrics.
Representatives from Veecap Eduventures emphasised the program’s mission: “Our goal is to ensure students are job-ready from day one. Academic excellence must be complemented by real-world problem-solving abilities, adaptability, and effective communication.”
Over the past decade, Indian higher education has been increasingly urged to integrate skill-based learning into its curriculum. Reports from NASSCOM and the India Skills Report highlight that while India produces millions of graduates each year, a significant percentage remain underemployed due to a lack of workplace-ready skills. Initiatives like WGCC’s internship program directly address this gap by offering industry exposure alongside academic learning.
The event concluded with the felicitation of students who had successfully completed the program, celebrating not just their academic achievements but also their preparedness to enter competitive job markets. By fostering collaboration between academia and industry, WGCC has taken a notable step towards shaping a workforce that can thrive in a rapidly evolving economy.
