Shillong: The Manotosh Chakravarty Debate Club of Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School successfully hosted the 23rd All Shillong Inter-School Debate Competition on Thursday in the school auditorium, bringing together young orators from 11 schools across Shillong and beyond.

The prestigious competition, held in memory of late Prof. Monotosh Chakravarty, saw intense arguments, critical thinking, and spirited presentations. The Champion’s Trophy went to Nisha Deb of Army Public School, while her schoolmate Angad Prabhakar bagged the First Runner-Up Trophy. The event was graced by A.T. Mondol, Minister of Power, as the Chief Guest, while Dr. A.S. Guha presided as the Speaker of the Debate.

This year’s edition carried special significance as it honoured the memory of Prof. Monotosh Chakravarty, after whom the debate club is named.

A revered academician, Prof. Chakravarty was the Vice Principal of the prestigious St. Edmund’s College, where he also served as HOD English Department l. He passed away  at the age of 64 in Kolkata after a prolonged illness on June 21 this year.

An alumnus of both Laban Bengalee Boys’ Higher Secondary School and St. Edmund’s College, Prof. Chakravarty was remembered not only as a brilliant teacher and educationist but also as a cultural icon of Shillong.

As a founding member of the Zenith Jubilieth Club in Laban, he was instrumental in shaping several of the city’s landmark community events. His dynamism and voice often highlighted both the achievements and challenges of local institutions.

The debate competition thus served as both a platform for young minds to showcase their talents and a heartfelt tribute to a man whose legacy continues to inspire Shillong’s academic and cultural fabric.
