Shillong: Meghalaya’s growing partnership with Japan received another significant boost today as Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated the Japanese Language Training Programme at Mount View Building, Barik, Shillong. The initiative, organised by the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society under the Department of Labour, Employment & Skill Development, aims to equip local youth with skills that can open doors to overseas employment, particularly in Japan’s expanding job market.

The launch event was attended by Labour Minister Methodius Dkhar, Asean Group Co. Ltd Chairman and CEO Nishikwa Toshiaki, Japanese tutors, and senior officials from the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society (MSSDS).

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister highlighted Meghalaya’s focused approach to building meaningful international collaborations. “We are very clear in our thought process—we don’t want tie-ups with multiple nations without depth. Japan shares similarities with the North East in terms of food, culture, and values, and it has been collaborating with India for many years,” he said.

Reflecting on the steady progress of Meghalaya’s engagement with Japan, Sangma recalled how the state’s journey began modestly. “Two years ago, we sent only two nurses to Japan. Today, 37 nurses from Meghalaya are working there, with many more expected to join soon,” he said. He further noted that these nurses have achieved N4 grading in Japanese language proficiency and are being encouraged to reach N3 level, which would translate to higher salaries and better opportunities.

The Chief Minister emphasised the economic impact of this collaboration. “Our nurses are sending home an average of ₹1 lakh every month, and together they generate about ₹5 crore annually in foreign exchange for the state,” he said.

He also underlined the government’s commitment to creating pathways for youth to earn, learn, and gain global exposure. “This is where the partnership between the ASEAN Group and the Meghalaya government becomes crucial. Earlier, our nurses trained for six months in Bangalore. You are fortunate—you will be trained right here in Shillong,” he told the students.

Sangma warmly welcomed the two Japanese tutors, assuring them of the government’s support during their stay in Meghalaya. He urged students to seize the opportunity with dedication.

A total of 86 students have enrolled for the six-month Japanese Language Training Programme, marking a promising step towards enhancing employability and strengthening Meghalaya’s global connections.
